A stellate ganglion block (SGB) is an image-guided injection of local anesthetic near the sympathetic nerve chain in the lower neck. At Interventional Orthopedics of Washington, SGB may be considered as an adjunctive option for selected patients with PTSD-related hyperarousal symptoms, dysautonomia, or persistent symptoms following COVID-19. The procedure is intended to temporarily reduce sympathetic nervous system signaling rather than permanently “reset” or cure the nervous system. Every treatment plan is physician-led and based on the patient’s symptoms, medical history, medications, anatomy, risks, and goals. Evidence and individual responses vary.
SGB is not appropriate for every patient and does not replace evidence-based mental health care or standard medical treatment. A consultation is required to review symptoms, medications, bleeding risk, infection risk, anatomy, and other contraindications. Temporary eyelid drooping, hoarseness, swallowing changes, warmth, or nasal congestion may occur, and uncommon but serious complications are possible. Benefits, duration of response, and the need for additional treatment vary.
Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) is a minimally invasive injection that targets a bundle of nerves in the neck called the sympathetic nervous system. By temporarily “resetting” this system, SGB can help reduce symptoms of conditions linked to chronic overactivation such as PTSD, anxiety disorders, dysautonomia, and Long COVID.
For many patients, SGB provides rapid symptom relief and restores a sense of calm that medication and talk therapy alone haven’t achieved.
SGB may be considered for conditions associated with sympathetic nervous system overactivation.

Answers to common questions about SGB safety, expected relief, nervous system regulation, PTSD, anxiety, dysautonomia, POTS, and Long COVID.
Yes. The procedure is image-guided and performed by trained physicians. Side effects are rare and typically mild.
Many patients experience weeks to months of relief. Some require repeat injections for longer-term results.
SGB doesn’t erase trauma but helps regulate the nervous system, allowing other treatments like therapy or medication to work more effectively.
SGB may help stabilize autonomic dysfunction in certain patients. Evaluation is needed to determine candidacy.
