Weight Loss Q&A

What can I do to lose weight when diet and exercise have failed?

Losing weight can feel impossible, especially when it involves relying on self-control and willpower alone.

When diet and exercise haven’t helped you lose weight or maintain weight loss, new medications such as semaglutide have been shown to be highly effective weight loss tool to help you reach your goals.

How does semaglutide work?

Semaglutide (also known as Ozempic and Wegovy) is a weight loss medication that was approved for weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition (such as pain, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol), or in patients with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater, for use in addition to a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity. This once-a-week under-the-skin injection is the first approved drug for weight management in adults with general obesity or overweight since 2014.

Semaglutide was a diabetic medication used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and was found to be also very helpful in weight loss. So much so that it was studied and ultimately approved by the FDA for weight loss.

What does semaglutide cost?

Starting doses and maintenance doses will vary person to person which will affect the monthly cost. Patients at Dr. Silva’s clinc get Semaglutide for about one third of the cost of brand name version like Wegovy and Ozempic.

What are the benefits of weight loss with semaglutide?

Semaglutide acts like human glucagon-like peptide-1 and suppresses appetite and increases satiety which allows people to lose weight without the struggle of hunger.

Prior medications used for weight loss were stimulants or antidepressants to suppress appetite but now we have a more direct means to effect hunger and satiety.

Some indirect benefits of semaglutide may also include:

- Improved blood sugar levels

- Reduced risk of diabetes

- Reduced cholesterol reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease

- May be neuroprotective
