If you suffer from chronic back or joint pain, you’ve probably already tried pain pills, cortisone injections, and physical therapy, and you may even be trying to decide if it’s time to have surgery. But did you know that new advances in cellular medicine could help you avoid surgery and eliminate pain by harnessing the intelligence and healing abilities of your own cells?

Cellular Therapy Utilizing Stem Cells Q&A

What is Cellular Therapy?

Cellular Therapy, which is commonly referred to as “stem cell therapy,” is a treatment in which Dr. Silva extracts a small amount of bone marrow from your hips, isolates the cells into a concentrate, and then injects this concentrate into the sites of injury.

Bone marrow contains a variety of nucleated cells, including stem cells, which have the potential to heal tissues, strengthen joints, and reduce or eliminate pain. Even after you reach adulthood, your body is filled with stem cells buried in blood vessels, adipose (fat) tissue and bone marrow.

Dr. Silva always uses ultrasound and x-ray (fluoroscopy) guidance when administering injectable therapies to ensure that the healing agents are delivered precisely to the area of injury.

How does Bone Marrow Concentrate (BMC) Cellular Therapy work?

When Dr. Silva extracts your bone marrow, he seeks to concentrate specialized cells known as mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The MSCs have the ability to change into a wide range of other types of cells, including:

- Muscle

- Tendon

- Ligament

- Bone

When injected into an injured area, these stem cells also stimulate other cells to accelerate their own healing process, so they can more easily and quickly repair themselves.

By restoring damaged bone, cartilage, and soft tissues like tendons, ligaments, and muscles, you can alleviate pain and regain mobility. Stem cell therapy helps you avoid potentially disabling surgeries, steroid injections, and long-term medication use.

What are the benefits of Cellular Therapy?

Cellular Therapy brings a number of benefits both in its ability to speed up your body’s natural healing and its tendency to revitalize areas of damage.

Cellular Therapy can:

- Reduce inflammation

- Alleviate pain

- Repair soft tissues and bone

The stem cells release inflammatory and anti-inflammatory substances that stop your joints from creating an overreaction to pain. By repairing damaged tissue and growing healthy new tissue, BMC cellular therapy removes the source of your pain.

Whether you’ve lost cartilage due to osteoarthritis or have torn or stretched your ligaments or tendons, stem cells from bone marrow concentrate (BMC) support the tissue they’ve been injected into. They also “inspire” damaged tissue to repair itself by providing essential growth factors.

Depending on the severity of your problem, you might need a series of PRP or BMC treatments over a series of months to repair your injuries and stop your pain.

What about stem cells that come from birth tissues such as Wharton’s Jelly, Amniotic or Placental stem cells?

None of these afterbirth products contain any live stem cells, yet there are still providers marketing these products to patients as “stem cell therapy” for both orthopedic conditions and other medical conditions with little to no evidence of their efficacy. It’s important for you to know that anyone still marketing these products as “stem cell therapy” is committing fraud. While these products can contain growth factors, they do not contain any living cells. Be wary of any clinic that tries to sell you stem cells from a bottle. Your own cells from your own bone marrow should always be used for these treatments. Oftentimes these fake stem cell treatments are more expensive than the evidence-based treatments we offer here, and provide little long-term benefit for the hefty price tag. Furthermore, many of these fake stem cell treatments are performed blind, meaning the provider doesn’t not use image guidance, which can be both dangerous and inaccurate. Last, these afterbirth products have caused deadly infections and permanent damage in some cases.

Dr. Silva’s mentors produced an excellent documentary on this topic that he believes anyone who is considering stem cell therapy should watch, called “From Jail Cell to Stem Cell” which is available on Amazon Prime.
