A Prospective Multi-Site Registry Study of a Specific Protocol of Autologous Bone Marrow Concentrate for the Treatment of Shoulder Rotator Cuff Tears and Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis and rotator cuff tears of the shoulder were treated with bone marrow concentrate (BMC) and found that patients had decreased pain, symptoms and disabilities associated with activities of daily living. 115 shoulders were successfully treated with BMC without adverse events.

The Takeaway: Shoulder pain dramatically affects people’s lives, and when physical therapy, NSAIDs and corticosteroids have not proven to be helpful, people need a better and more sophisticated option. Surgery can’t do much for osteoarthritis, but BMC can help significantly. If you have a tear of the rotator cuff, then doing an injection of BMC may allow you to heal the tendon naturally without the need for surgery. Also, surgery commonly doesn’t address the underlying dysfunction that resulted in the tear, putting patients at risk for a re-tear in a matter of time. If you suffer from shoulder problems, schedule an appointment with Dr. Silva to see what type treatments are available for you.
